For one night only, Once Fallen will be playing the shock jock "Juan Fallon" and take the place of Bill Blathers.

NOTICE TO ALL RADIO ROLE-PLAY PARTICIPANTS

Bill Blathers came down with a critical case of bullshititis and is currently being treated at Buqua Island Mental Health Treatment Center. In the meantime, Mr. Blathers's assistant, Mr. Juan Fallon will run the class. The time is still 8:05 Eastern Time, the topic is still the same, the only difference is a different host and a different call in code.

The scheduled topic is "Content topic: Why are Stranger Sex Crimes the Largest Segment of Violent Crimes?"

Episode for April 2nd 2012: Beware the Three Major Content Fallacies when discussing Convicted Sex Offender Statistics.

In our last five weeks of Verbally Assertive Training (VAT) here at Radio-Role-Play (season ends on Monday April 30), the focus will again return to rhetorical tactics to be employed by the interviewing FALLON character.
The "tempo" throttle will be set to low/medium while the dialogue and interaction (FALLON'S tactics) will focus on these three commonly used fallacies to be used against you (source: http://www.fallacyfiles.org/):
1. The False Dilemma Fallacy - This fallacy is also known as the "false dichotomy" ("either / or") fallacy. The false dilemma fallacy starts out with a concise argument where the choices are either A or B. But soon thereafter, choice A is quickly eliminated for some reason and therefore choice B is the correct choice. The fallacy is that choices A or B is artificially limited and that there are other choices (C, D, ...) to considered. Don't get boxed in by the false dilemma.
2. The Appeal to Authority Fallacy - "(Almost) anything that person A says about Subject S is (probably) true." Person A is the "authority" and S is the subject matter. Appeals to authority are fallacious where in case we do not have a good reason to accept the authority claim. But, if we do have good reasons to accept the authority claim, then the appeal to authority is not fallacious. Conclusion: Not all appeals to authority are fallacious.
3. The Slippery Slope Fallacy - This fallacy consists of a chain of inferences where the first claim in the series is accepted which then leads to the next claim in the series until at which time the chain ends with therefore this conclusion (If A then B, if B then C (C is "bad"), therefore since C is bad then A is also bad). If the end point conclusion is opposite of our position (based on questionable inferences along the way) then we must exercise caution with this fallacy. Do not assume that any chain of reasoning (linkage) actually exists and do not assume that any chain element (argument) is true (or false). Blathers will use this tactic when evidence is scant and his confidence is high that he can fool you.
= = = = = =

This week's substantive issues will revolve around any number of sex offender statistics used in the past - from RSO recidivism rates to general incarceration rates - and the many other common RSO facts that we have debated and interviewed with from previous shows.

Keep in mind that the FALLON character isn't so concerned about your "facts" as he is with appealing to the emotions of his listeners. Be careful not to be too "dry" with the facts (95% of ... and 3.5% of ...) but instead practice speaking your facts in a conversational manner using statistical words such as "the vast number of ...", "most of ..." "the least likely ..." and others. Keep the hard percentage numbers as your backup if challenged further.

All other fallacy tactics (i.e., FALLON'S dirty rotten tricks) will NOT be deployed this week so that we can only focus on well thought out responses to this week's three FALLON's fallacy challenges and topic content.

This week's substantive questions to ponder:
1. Why are convicted sex offender (CSOs) re-offense rates so high?
2. Why do we allow CSOs to live in areas where children live when the obvious dangerousness exists?
3. Should CSOs wear public identifiers (orange clothing, GPS, ...) when out in public?
4. Why would anybody doubt that CSOs are a great public danger since TV news and law enforcement frequently warn of their dangers?
5. Should the pedophile registry be made more publicly available than just its accessibility via sex offender websites?
6. Since CSOs are all dangerous, shouldn't families with little children be especially careful about these strangers in the neighborhood?

There will not be guests or call-ins except on a special live episodes. It will be designed for brevity and specifically for podcasts. Think of it as "Once Fallen" on the go!

The subject of civil commitment is so deep, we needed two episodes to cover it all. This episode covers the topics not fully covered in the first episode, namely, the weird ways we try to determine who will recidivate sexually and who won't. Risk assessment, polygraphs, plethysmograph.... Maybe we'll even do a little Ouija and divining too!

Civil Commitment has already existed in a number of states, and the SCOTUS decision in Kansas v. Hendricks case allows the use of civil commitment for Former Offenders considered a "high risk" to re-offend. But is civil commitment really a public safety measure or just a tactic to circumvent the US Constitution and detain people who have completed their sentences? I will be sharing the letters I received from a Minnesota RFSO currently imprisoned in a civil commitment center. What he has to share is very eye-opening. This is part one of a two part series on civil commitment laws.

When it comes to sex crime allegations these days, it is guilty until proven innocent. Even when those falsely accused are exonerated, the stigma follows them for years. Is this truly as rare an occurrence as society tends to believe? After listening to this episode, you'll believe differently!

With the ever increasing restrictions on former offenders, a growing number of registrants are facing homelessness. Florida even sends them to live under a bridge. More recently, a homeless registrant froze to death after he was denied shelter because the shelter was too close to a school. Tonight we will be discussing the impact of homelessness on the former offender, which is especially scary considering the state of the economy.

Also, I will be discussing my counter to a protest held in Cincinnati on April 8, 2009, against a local rehabilitation center. I'll give the details from the event that the media did not cover.

Note: Due to necessity of guests, ReFORM Radio is returning to Saturday nights!

Since the advent of Megan's law, a myriad of sex offender laws have come as the result of reactions to high profile but extremely rare rape/ murder cases. Laws are created as a response to these events and pass unopposed. Emotions run high, people search for answers, and blood is sought. Thankfully we rarely have to experience that firsthand. But I am at ground zero of the latest of these extremely rare cases and am witnessing firsthand the latest round of predator panic. In this episode we will examine the cases of Alycia Nipp of Washington and Esme Kenney of Ohio and how this has impacted everything from a sentence for a violent assault to sexting to treatment facilities for sex offenders.

Do we really need any more proof that those carrying the stigma of "Registered Sex Offender" is a second class citizen in the US? Not really. However, some late-breaking news from Ohio, North Carolina, and Washington have established Former Sex Offenders are More than just a SUSPECT class; Former Offenders are officially becoming a TARGET class! The disposition of the Angry Tammy Lee Gibson vigilante Case, the new NC hate crimes bill, and the Sewell v. Ohio 1st Ohio Appellate decision are just a few of the topics for this special event!

It's not just sex offenders anymore -- men in general are becoming pariahs of society. John Walsh tells us never hire babysitters. Businesses have policies against putting men in proximity to kids or ever be alone with them. Men are afraid of accusations so much, male participation in child-friendly activities have dropped. Has feminism and Predator Panic effectively emasculated our culture?

A dozen years have passed since the first sex offender registries went online. Despite vigilantism, fearmongering, and ostracism of the Former Offender, registries are considered both popular and lawful. However, until now few have studied the effectiveness of the laws until now. The results were as we've known all along -- registries do not work and cause barriers to ReFORM. In light of new research and evidence not available in past rulings, perhaps it is time for SCOTUS to ReVISIT the ReGISTRIES!

Tonight, we'll discuss the beliefs of BOTH sides of this debate which cause mental barriers to rational discourse of ReFORM. Representative of the "other side" of this argument is "Valigator," a well known activist with a reputation for being hard-nosed and no-nonsense.
Sure to be a heated (but hopefully still rational and respectful) discussion! But let's keep it clean, people! I do not want to squander this learning experience!
