"I started out playing trombone in grade school and earned a scholarship to FLorida A&M to march in the "100"!! I try to mimic the sound of a trombone when I sing. My style is a combination of listening to Marvin Gaye (who wanted to be a Jazz singer), Johnny Hartman, Sinatra, and Nat King Cole! I also have an affinity for old soul music and hip hop so I mix them all up and call the music...DIRTY JAZZ!! I wouls love for God to use me and my music as a vessel for kids to embrace that...INTELLECT IS THE NEW GANGSTA!!"

The BassMint Bros. on Fisiweâ??s LoveArtLife Radio
Category: Music

LoveArtLife Radio Sundays from 7pm-8pm Log onto www.vocalizedink.org and hit click to listen. Then call in and talk to us at 1-724-444-7444 Love Art Life Call Id is 17395
What do you get if you take a jazz organ trio, some music software, and some old school, recording innovations? The Bass Mint Bros.; easily one of the most dynamic dance music groups to emerge in the industry. In the tradition of Booker T. & The MGs "Green Onion," and Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters;" their forthcoming debut, "Sketches Of A Neighborhood," offers a funky, ambient musical journey through a Saturday in the life of an underground club musician/ disc jockey. Using vintage, live instruments to create an album the blurs the genres of ambient house/ Afro-Beat, break-beat and jazz.
The Bass Mint Bros. are a trio of 30-something year-old, Real Book reared jazz musicians from New York, now living in The Boston area (Except for Yusef, who visits frequently from the Bronx). All having grown up together in the Northeast Bronx, and occasionally playing together in neighborhood bands at block parties and talent shows; and later playing recording sessions for producers, as uncredited, poorly paid (if at all) contributors to hundreds of hip-hop, trip-hop, jazz, house, funk and r&b/soul projects.
It was all so serendipitous: Bassist/ guitarist, Barry Hughes, and keyboardist/ percussionist, Yusef Bey were watching the documentary, "Standing In The Shadows of Motown"; and pianist/ composer Mwalim was listening to some old favorite hip-hop CDs from the early 1990’s that sampled bebop and hard-bop jazz, and it all seemed to click at the same time... let’s cut an instrumental record! Over the course of three weeks, with some ’borrowed’ music software, some vintage instruments and serious jamming, The BASS MINT BROS explore the genres of jazz, soul, house, and acid/ nu-jazz, with their debut mixtape/CD "Sketches Of A Neighborhood" featuring seven straight up sample-worthy cuts, often visiting the 24-bar, hip-hop song form. Expected for release in Spring 2008
According to Rogelio Cruz of The Rare Groove Loft, "...any rappers worth their microphones should be lining up to drop lyrics over these beats, as the three cuts I heard ("Awakened by the Noon Day Sun," "The Corner Store," and "2 Cheese Slices & A Drink.") are truly sample-worthy efforts."

Jamaica, Queens, singer-songwriter Anisa has always been in love with soul music. Singing at the tender age of four, Anisa's music is rich in the concepts of life, love and artsyness--blazing the trails of artists like Jill Scott, Musiq and Erykah Badu. Since beginning her grind in the NYC underground music scene, Anisa has worked among a plethora of prominent artists, including Martha Wash, Cissy Houston, Bilal, and Spoken Word Artist Rha Goddess. In 2003, Anisa released her first independent project entitled "She is What She Is-The Live Bootleg Sampler" which included the underground hit "Stereo Luv." After receiving wonderful responses from a wide range of audiences on her own, Anisa began the "Soul Power Collective" showcasing a group of phenomenal artists at many NYC clubs, including Harlem's Sugar Shack Cafe, Joe's Pub and the Groove. Anisa is currently the host of the weekly Soul F' Real Open Mic held at the Five Spot Supper Club in Brooklyn and is currently working on a forth-coming independent album entitled "The Anisa Show".

I am a poet, born in the ghettos of New Orleans raised in Israel. My life has been diverse on many levels, and so goes my creativity. I am a way maker and innovator, always thinking of way to progress the creativity of the human experience.

Poetry found me and pulled me from a dire state two years ago, and I have not seem to shake her yet. Jazz has alway been a cornerstone of my being, like oxygen to my lungs, from first screams to last breaths my heart will kick the bass. Jazz and poetry just mixed with me like a fine glass of Grand Marnier on ice...two parts jazz and one part poetry stirred well not shaken baby!

Sparlha Swa is a velvetine clash of impeccable vocals and haunting modal chords. She sings from the place where sounds meets spirit, a soundtrack for the seeker. Performing mostly solo on guitar, she also appears as a duo accompanied by Shree Shyam, master of bass and percussion, and in a quartet with bass, percussion/kit and cello.
